What is sieving?

Sieving, also known as screening, is a process for separating bulk materials based on particle size. Using mesh screens or sieves with specific openings, the material is classified, eliminating impurities, clumps, or particles of undesired size.

This process is crucial to ensuring the homogeneity and quality of the final product, especially in industries where particle size distribution is a critical factor. For example, in Mexico, for the construction industry, the quality of screened aggregates is vital to the strength of concrete, directly impacting the safety of construction projects. Likewise, the agricultural sector uses sieving for more than 60% of its grain exports to comply with international quality standards.

How is the sieving test done?

The sieve test, or particle size analysis, is a standardized procedure for determining the particle size distribution of a material. It is performed using a set of sieves with progressively smaller openings, arranged from largest to smallest.

The process includes:

  • Sampling: a representative portion of the lot is taken.
  • Sieving: the material is placed on the top sieve and subjected to controlled vibration. The weight of the sample retained on each sieve is measured to calculate the percentage of material that passes or is retained by each mesh.
  • Analysis: it is verified that at least 95% of the product meets the required measurement (according to standards such as NMX-FF-034-SCFI in Mexico). This information is essential to ensure that the product meets the quality specifications of each industry.
